PURPOSE:To perform the titled conversion without requiring the removal of steam in exhaust gas by converting SO2 in the gas into H2S, mixing the gas with exhaust gas so bypassed as to adjust the H2S to SO2 ratio to a predetermined value, and causing Claus reaction. CONSTITUTION:A process for converting SO2 in exhaust gas into sulfur includes a process for reducing SO2 in exhaust gas contg. SO2 and steam to H2S in the presence of carbon and a Claus reaction process for converting SO2 into sulfur byreaction with the H2S formed in the reducing process. By bypassing part of exhaust gas before feeding to the reducing process, feeding the remaining exhaust gas to the reducing process to convert SO2 into H2S, and mixing the gas with the by passed exhaust gas, the vol. of exhaust gas bypassed is adjusted so that the H2S to SO2 ratio becomes a predetermined value after mixing, and the mixed gas is fed to the Claus reaction process. Thus, SO2 can well be converted into sulfur even if exhaust gas contains steam.
