摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a highly fine color liquid crystal element which provides the same function as a black matrix by layering the edge parts of filters adjacent to each other for forming layered parts, and changing birefringence size in a liquid crystal layer of the layered part and those of the other parts for preventing light leakage. CONSTITUTION:Three-colored filters are formed on a glass board 1 by means of a printing method, and the edges parts of the filters 2, 3 adjacent to each other are layered for forming a layered parts w1. The thickness (d) of a liquid crystal layer 5 becomes thinner by the thickness of the layered parts w1 of the filter 2 to become thickness d1. If anisotropy of refraction index of the liquid crystal is taken as n, phase delay of the respective parts becomes nd1 at the layered parts w1, and nd at the parts other than the layered parts. Generally, light permeability ratio can be made smaller when phase delay is at nd1, and the same light breaking performance as a black matrix can be provided in the layered parts. With this constitution, the thickness of a liquid crystal layer can be controlled by layering the filter edge parts, light leakage at those parts can be prevented, and only forming a color filter is necessary, so it is possible to simplify the process largely.
