PURPOSE:To prevent the damage of a fed flaw detection head by adjusting an operation speed on and after the change in a slip ratio to an almost actual speed, by correcting the operation speed of a skew roll to the actual speed between photoelectric sensors. CONSTITUTION:The rotary shaft of a skew roll 2(2a-2f) is connected to the rotation detector 16 of an automatic ultrasonic flaw detector by a coupling to form pulse signals corresponding to the number of rotations of the roll 2 and the pulses generated by the detector 16 are counted by a counter 17. The angle of the roll 2 is preset and the feed speed of a material 1 to be inspected is operated according to a predetermined system by an operator 12. Next, the speed ratio of said feed speed and the feed speed preset at a moment when the material 1 to be inspected blocks the lights from photoelectric sensors 8a-8d is operated. Then, the times becoming equal to integrated distances L2-L4 calculated by a predetermined operation method are set as the material contact timings of probe heads 11a-11c to prevent the damage of the heads 11a-11c.
