PURPOSE:To use a specific 2H-cyclohepta[b]furan-2-one or its derivative as a cardiotonic agent. CONSTITUTION:A cardiotonic agent is prepared by using the 2H-cyclohepta[b] furan-2-one of formula I [A is H or lower alkyl; B is H, COR, COOR or COCH2 COOR (R is lower alkyl)] or its derivative as an active component. A concrete example of the compound of formula I is 3-methoxycarbonyl-2H-cyclohepta[b] furan-2-one. It has been found that the compound of formula I has remarkable cardiotonic activity and is useful as a cardiotonic. In contrast with conventional cardiotonics, an excellent effect can be expected because of its unique chemical structure. It can be administered orally or parenterally. The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting the compound of formula II (X is Cl, CH2O-, etc.) with the compound of formula III (R' is lower alkyl).
