The refractory lining of a shaft furnace comprises oblong fire-bricks laid head-on, i.e. with their end faces towards the inside. The improvement is that at least some of the bricks have at least their inward facing portions provided with chamfered and/ or (concavely) rounded edges (5,6). The edges of each inward end face may be thus chamfered or rounded (5), these chamfers preferably extending (c) to 10-20 mm from the respective edges. The longitudinal edges may be thus chamfered (6) over at least half the brick length from the said inward end face these chamfers preferably extending (d) to 5-10 mm from the respective edges. Alternatively, the upper (9) and lower (10) brick faces may be tapered (7,8) divergently from the inward end face (4) over 25-75% of the brick length, both tapers being 1-5 mm high (e,f).
|
