Method of quantitatively determining particles in samples

In a method of quantitatively determining particles in samples, in particular particulate combustion residues from internal combustion engines, the particles in the sample are introduced into the electromagnetic field produced by a microwave generator (1). At least one electromagnetic field parameter which varies because of the particles in the sample is measured and the number of particles in the sample is determined from the measured variations. This method makes it possible to evaluate the number of particles present in the samples in a simple, precise manner which is sufficiently fast even for continuous measurements. <IMAGE>
