PURPOSE:A perfluorocarbon polymer bearing sulfonic acid groups, which has excellent heat resistance and wearing resistance, is used as a catalyst to effect the reaction between isobutylene or hydrocarbons containing the same and methanol, thus producing the titled compound without deterioration in the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The reaction between isobutylene or hydrocarbons containing the same and methanol gives methyl t-tubyl ether wherein a perfluorocarbon polymer bearing sulfonic acid groups such as a copolymer from sulfonylfluoride vinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene (trade name: Nafion made by Dupont Co.) is used as a catalyst. The polymer has an ion exchange capacity of about 0.5-1.5mg equivalent/g. The most preferred particle sizes are about 0.01-5mm.. The deterioration of the catalyst is not observed in both liquid-pass fluid bed and fixed bed processes. |
