<p>An air conditioning system comprising a heat pump, includes an automatic control arrangement which is responsive to actual and desired space temperature and outdoor temperature signals to control the heat pump compressor (14) speed. In the heating mode when the outdoor temperature drops below a predetermined minimum value, the control arrangement causes the compressor to operate in excess of its normal rated speed, e.g. up to 150% thereof, in order to provide supplemental heating.
