Vane type rotary machine for gases - has compression and expansion cylinders in same stator with common rotor between them

A cylindrical rotor (2) revolves in an elliptical stator (1). The rotor touches the stator at the narrowest section leaving two crescent shaped gaps. Vanes (3) sliding in radial slots in the rotor are pressed out to touch the stator. There are inlet and exhaust ports in both gaps and the rotor moves gas between them. Gas is compressed in one side and expanded in the other. The stator is shaped so that the volume on one side is greater than on the other. For a heat pump the compressor (4) does more work than the expander (5) but for other machines the relationship can be different.
