The invention relates to a process and a device for placing one upon the other items 8 to be packed and for using a wrapping device to form a collective package expediently comprising a base 6. According to the invention, a supporting member 7 which slides in the vertical direction is placed upon the base 6. The items 8 to be packed are then placed on the base 6, expediently in layers, within the extent defined by the sliding supporting member 7, and the wrapping is effected with commencement from below around the sliding supporting member 7, the wrapping height being raised maximally to the height determined by the upper edge 10 of the sliding supporting member 7, the sliding supporting member 7 remaining between the packaging film 3 and the article 8 to be packed. As the packing progresses, the sliding supporting member 7 is raised such that its upper edge is kept below the plane determined by the upper edge of the packaging film 3 and such that the lowermost edge 16 of the supporting member remains below the level a determined by the article 8 to be packed. <IMAGE>
