The invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which the substituents X, Y, R<1> and R<2> have the customary meanings in dyestuff chemistry and m is 1 or 2, which process is characterised in that compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which m, R<1>, X and Y have the given meaning, are reacted with a sulphonyl halide of the formula Hal-SOR<2> in which R<2> has the abovementioned meaning and Hal represents fluorine, chlorine or bromine, in the presence of a tertiary organic nitrogen base having a pka value of 2.0 to 8.5 and in the presence of a diluent, which can also be the organic nitrogen base itself, at temperatures of from 0 to 200 DEG C.
