PURPOSE:To decrease height of a magnetic chuck, increase its attractive force and widen an effective work area, by arranging polarity reversible permanent magnets between magnetic pole pieces of the magnetic chuck while polarity non-reversible permanent magnets between a bottom plate part in a housing and the magnetic pole piece. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic chuck 10 contains a housing 12, magnetic pole pieces 14, 16, plural polarity reversible permanent magnets 18 and polarity non-reversible permanent magnets 20, 22, 24. The housing 12, having a bottom plate part 26 and a pair of frame parts 28, forms a rectangular parallelepiped-shaped case cooperatively with the pole piece positioned in both ends in the width direction of the bottom plate part 26 of the magnetic pole pieces 14. The pole pieces 14, 16, extending in the width direction of the bottom plate part 26, are parallelly further alternately arranged between the frame parts 28. The pole piece 14 connects with the bottom plate part 26 and the frame parts 28. The pole piece 16 is arranged with a space from the bottom plate part 26 and the frame parts 28. The polarity reversible permanent magnets 18, being arranged one by one between the pole pieces 14, 16, bring one pole surface into contact with the pole piece 14 while the other pole surface into contact with the pole piece 16, and a coil 30 is wound.
