The permanent magnet material has the compsn. R(CO1-x-y-alphabeta- FexCuyMalphaM'beta)A where X= 0.01-0.02, y=0.02-0.25, alpha= 0.001- 0.15, beta = 0.0001-0.001 and A= 6.0-8.3; R rare earth; M= one or more of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, V and Ta; M'= B or Bi+Si; and the amt. of Fe is less than 15 wt.% of total compsn. The R is at least 80 wt.% Sm and/or Cl. The material is made by the stages of melting and casting a metal mixt. in an inert atmos., crushing to particle size 10 micron max., orienting in a magnetic field, forming a shaped article, sintering in an inert atmos. at 1150-1270 deg.C for 3-6 hrs. followed by soln. heat treating at 1120-1210 deg.C for 3-12 hrs., holding at 750-850 deg.C for 4-12 hrs. and then ageing by cooling.
