A reinforced fluoropolymer composite is presented, which includes a fluoropolymer and a fluoro-functionalized nanocrystalline cellulose in which the outer circumference of the nanocrystalline cellulose has been functionalized with fluorinated substrates. The fluoro-functionalized nanocrystalline cellulose may be used to produce stable dispersions with fluoropolymers exhibiting enhanced adhesion between the nanocrystalline particles and fluoropolymer in a composite material, and decreased surface free energy of the cellulose surface. |

1. A reinforced fluoropolymer composite, comprising:
a fluoropolymer; and a fluoro-functionalized nanocrystalline cellulose in which only the outer circumference of the nanocrystalline cellulose has been functionalized with fluorinated substrates; wherein the fluoropolymer composite has a tensile strength ranging from about 500 psi to about 5,000 psi;wherein the fluorinated substrate comprises
(a) a fluorobenzyl electrophile having formula (1):wherein X is selected from the group consisting of tosylate, mesylate, chlorine, bromine, iodine, alkoxide, and hydroxide; n is from 0 to about 11; m is from 0 to about 6, r is from 0 to about 5, p is from 0 to about 5, q is from 0 to about 4, wherein at least p or q must be greater than 0. |
