The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method to control a deactivation of a variable cylinder engine. According to the present invention, the apparatus to control the deactivation of a variable cylinder engine comprises: a torque detecting part to obtain a required torque of a vehicle; a vehicle velocity detecting part to detect a velocity of the vehicle; a displacement detecting part to detect the displacement value of the accelerator pedal of the vehicle; a mode setting part to determine a target variable cylinder mode depending on the required torque; a determination part to determine whether or not the vehicle can enter into the target variable cylinder mode by comparing the velocity of the vehicle and the displacement value of the accelerator pedal with a vibration and noise generation section which has been measured in advance with respect to the target variable cylinder mode; and a control part to control a deactivation of the variable cylinder engine of the vehicle depending on the target variable cylinder mode if it is determined that the vehicle can enter into the target variable cylinder mode. According to the present invention, vibration or noise generated during mode conversion is reduced by determining the target variable cylinder mode depending on the required torque of a driver, and controlling the deactivation of the variable cylinder engine in a corresponding mode only if it is determined that vibration or noise is not generated during entry into the corresponding mode in consideration to the velocity and acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle. |
