A composition for use as a paint stripper consists of a primary liquid plasticizer for a halogen-containing vinylidene polymer together with from 5 to 40% of the weight thereof of an alkyl substituted monocyclic aryl hydrocarbon having from 14 to 24 carbon atoms in the molecule and not more than 3 alkyl substituents of which one has at least 6 but not more than 18 carbon atoms. Suitable plasticizers are esters such as phthalates, triaryl phosphates, alkyl diaryl phosphates, dialkyl aryl phosphates, and dialkyl sebacates and adipates. Suitable hydrocarbons are those obtained by alkylating benzene with the material obtained by chlorination of a kerosene fraction ("keryl benzene") and by alkylating benzene with acyclic propylene polymers containing 9 to 18 carbon atoms. The composition may also be used as a plasticizer for halogen-containing vinylidene polymers such as polymers of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloroacetate, chlorostyrene and chlorobutadienes, and copolymers thereof, or copolymers with vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, alkyl, allyl, methallyl and phenyl esters of maleic, crotonic, itaconic and fumaric acids, vinyl aromatic compounds, dienes such as butadiene, unsaturated amides and unsaturated nitriles. The polymer composition may be used for moulding or coating articles by dipping, followed by heat treatment.ALSO:A polymer composition comprises a solid halogen-containing "vinylidene" polymer and for each 100 parts by weight thereof (a) 25 to 100 p.b.w. of a primary liquid plasticizer for the polymer, and (b) 5 to 40% of the weight of (a) of an open chain alkyl substituted monocyclic aryl hydrocarbon having 14 to 24 carbon atoms in the molecule and not more than three alkyl substituents of which one has at least six but not more than 18 carbon atoms. Suitable plasticizers include phthalates, phosphates, and esters of polymethylene dicarboxylic acid such as sebacates and adipates: many examples are given. Component (b) may be obtained by alkylation of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with mono-olefins or alkyl halides. The "vinylidene" polymers are exemplified in the Specification not only by polymers of vinylidene chloride but also by polymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl chloroacetate, chlorostyrene and chlorobutadiene, and also by copolymers of these compounds with one another and other olefinic compounds, e.g. copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, various vinyl esters, alkyl, alkenyl and phenyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids, vinyl, e.g. styrene, divinyl benzene, mono- and di-chlorostyrenes, vinyl naphthalene and p-ethyl styrene, alpha methyl styrene, aromatic compounds, dienes, e.g. butadienes and chlorobutadiene, acrylic amide and anilide, and acrylonitrile. The composition may be in the form of a plastisol of a polymer of 0,05 to 200 micron particle size. Other ingredients present in exemplary compositions, in all of which the polymer is polyvinyl chloride, are dibasic lead stearate, lead silicate, silica gel, calcium carbonate, titania, a commercial bariumcadmium complex stabilizer and epoxidized soya-bean oil. In comparative examples the specified alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons are replaced by others outside the scope of the definition above, e.g. C25 alkyl benzene and alkyl polyphenyls. |
