[Also in Division A4] A seat squab (Fig. 1, not shown), e.g. in a vehicle, is supported by means including a damped fluid spring of the form shown. Gas 14 in an accumulator 11 loads liquid 15 which communicates by way of a valve 18 with the cylinder space 10 of a piston-cylinder unit 6, 8 to which the seat load is applied. The valve 18 provides a smaller flow cross-section to liquid passing from the reservoir to the cylinder than it does in the opposite direction. The space 10 also communicates with a pressure adjusting chamber 21 in which an adjustment piston 24 can be set by a hand wheel 25. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the accumulator (11) and adjusting chamber (21) are in a separate housing from the pistoncylinder unit (6, 8) and the housings are linked by a conduit of such length that the pistoncylinder unit can be located beneath a vehicle seat and the control hand wheel can be on the vehicle dashboard. The purpose of the adjustment is to permit matching the spring rate of the seat suspension to the weight of the seat's occupant. |
