The present invention relates to a device and a method for determining the plasma bilirubin level especially in neonates. The system for measuring plasma bilirubin comprises an instrument having a reflectometer, able to detect the plasma bilirubin in a blood sample from which the respective corpuscular portion was removed on a membrane suitable for the purpose and a strip or stick comprising a filter and the membrane. The system consisting of the instrument and the strip can measure plasma bilirubin with an accuracy of +/- 5% at bilirubin concentrations in the range 3-30 mg/dL (approx. 50- 500 µ??l/L) at haematocrit level up to 60% on blood samples of just 20 - 25 µl.
