PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starting method of a shield machine for branching, which makes the shield machine for branching efficiently started by facilitating the assembly of a rear drum part equipped with a sealing member, when the shield machine for branching is started from an existing tunnel. SOLUTION: This starting method for the shield machine for branching, which performs the assembly of the rear drum part in the existing tunnel, comprises: a step of arranging a tail member 69, in which a segment 77 serving as a reaction receiving member is preinstalled in a steel shell 75 with the sealing member 73, in the rear of the rear drum part 59; a step of making the steel shell 75 abut on the rear drum part 59 by securing the reaction via the segment 77 in the tail member 69; and a step of joining the steel shell 75 and the rear drum part 59 together in the state of making them abut on each other.
