PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retainer for a ball bearing capable of elongating the life of the ball bearing by improving the lubricating efficiency by stably supplying an appropriate amount of lubricant required for lubricating the ball. SOLUTION: The retainer 5 for the ball bearing is extended from one way to another of an internal diameter side peripheral portion 5f and an external diameter side peripheral portion 5g of a pocket 5b in the inner surface of the pocket 5b and a recessed portion 5e through which the equator 10 passes against an automatic shaft A of the ball 4 is provided. The recessed portion 5e is in parallel with a shaft E tying the center 01 of the pocket 5b and the center O2 of a pitch circle diameter PCD of the pocket 5b and is constituted by a cylindrical surface CY having a center shaft B passing through a pitch circle P tying the center 01 of a plurality of pockets 5b. A width in the axial direction of the recessed portion 5e is the widest in the one way of the internal diameter side peripheral portion 5f and the external diameter side peripheral portion 5g of the pocket 5b and is reduced facing to the center of the pocket 5b, and the minimum value Hmin and the maximum value Hmax of the width in the axial direction H of the recessed portion 5e in the one way of the internal diameter side peripheral portion 5f and the external diameter side peripheral portion 5g of the pocket 5b are defined.
