PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element which has high performance while being provided with a positive hole transportation layer composed of an aromatic organic amine of low molecular weight which is formed by a coating method. SOLUTION: This is the organic electroluminescent element provided with the positive hole transportation layer which takes the aromatic organic amine having a dissociable substituent such as carboxyl group and a hydroxyl group in the molecule as the positive hole transportation agent. The aromatic organic amine is dissolved into water, aliphatic lower alcohol, or a mixed solvent of these and made to be the solution, and the solution is coated on the positive electrode and by drying it, the positive hole transportation layer can be formed. On the positive hole transportation layer, for example, the solution which takes a hydrocarbon as a solvent is coated, and without generating disorder on the positive hole transportation layer, a light-emitting layer or the like can be formed.
