To clean out yarn faults, especially at an open-end spinner, the yarn is monitored as it is wound on to a bobbin. On detection of a deviation from a nominal value, the yarn spinning is interrupted and the spinner is stopped at least partially. On detection of a fault, the yarn length to be unwound is registered between the first indication of a fault and the start of a new yarn end. The yarn length is established according to the monitored characteristic, the category of the fault, the yarn delivery speed, and the shut-down and reaction times of the spinner components.
