Fast dissolving compacted formulation of ribavirin and process for its production

Fast dissolving compacted formulation of ribavirin containing ribavirin free of its polymorphic forms and a pharmaceutically acceptable disintegrant wherein said formulation has a tap density of at least 0.6 g/ml, more than 80 % by weight of the ribavirin dissolves in water in 30 minutes and the disintegration time of the formulation is less than 10 minutes. The formulation is in the form for oral administration. A method for producing said formulation consists in admixing an antivirally effective amount of ribavirin ranging from 200 mg to 400 mg, an effective amount of pharmaceutically acceptable disintegrant ranging from 1.0 to 3.0 wt. % and an effective amount of at lest one filler ranging from 20 to 40 wt. %, compacting the prepared mixture at a compressing force in the range of 50 to 75 kN and admixing the compact with an effective amount of a lubricant ranging from 0.75 to 2.0 wt. %.
