The press comprises a sealing and suction device (32; 232) mounted around the plunger (18; 218) with the possibility of sliding axially along the same; the said device creates an airtight seal against the wall of a billet container (20) when the plunger is working within -the chamber of said container (20). One or more connection tubes (42) connect the enclosed space with an apparatus generating a vacuum or with an environment under vacuum. The vacuum is created in the container before beginning extrusion, as soon as the plunger has entered 'the container.
