A gas fuelled lighter includes a burner valve 2 mounted in the lighter casing for axial movement relative thereto so that a movement in one axial direction produces a progressive increase in fuel flow, and movement in the opposite axial direction produces a progressive decrease in fuel flow, the movement being controlled by a manually operable button 6 mounted on the external wall of the casing. The button 6 is connected to a rod 5 which bears transversely against the upper end of a rod 1 against the action of a spring 7. The rod 1 is pivoted near its lower end about a horizontal axis and at its lower end has a cam surface 3, apex 3a of which bears upon a shoulder 4 on the burner valve 2. Depression of the button 6 causes the rod 1 to pivot clockwise rotating the cam 3, and shoulder 4 is allowed to rise under the action of a spring (not shown) to increase the gas flow. In the undepressed position of button 6, the gas flow is sufficient to produce a small flame, the gas flow being cut off completely by a hinged cover or snuffer arm which when closed will depress the burner valve 2 bodily so that the shoulder 4 is out of contact with the apex 3a. |
