PURPOSE: A chroma overload protection apparatus is provided to prevent over saturated chroma caused by channel impairments in a video system. CONSTITUTION: A chrominance signal is separated into component vectors U, V(30) and each path for the component vectors U, V is coupled with each of outputs(56, 58) via respective paths including gain controllable amplifiers(60, 62). The chroma signal overload protection device(50) is provided with a saturation calculation device 58 that measures the saturation of the component vectors U, V and supplies a saturation display signal to a gain characteristic device(72). The gain characteristic device(72) controls both the gains of the amplifiers to limit the magnitude of the component vectors U, V by each pixel proportionally as a prescribed function of the saturation display signal thereby supplying the output component vectors U, V without causing a shift of a hue under a limited condition.
