PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for acquiring an initial synchronization of a mobile communication system are provided to dramatically reduce the time used for a typical full synchronous acquisition operation by using at information of a neighbor base station received from a base station using location information of a terminal. CONSTITUTION: A memory stores location information of a neighbor base station. A control section searches a location of the most proximity neighbor base station using current location information when the power is turned on and obtains a synchronization by acquiring PN(Pseudo Noise) offset of the searched neighbor base station. The maximum number of the searched proximity base station is 3. The location information of the neighbor base station is location information of a BTS(Base Transceiver Subsystem). A terminal provides its current location information. The terminal stores the location information of the neighbor base station, has a database, searches the most proximity neighbor base station from the database using the current location information.
