In a process to encapsulate the refuse held at an open waste disposal site, the waste is covered with a temporary or permanent single covering layer which is prepared from a mixture of substances which are chosen according to the nature of the potential hazard emanating from the site. The cover protects the refuse site from erosion and the ingress of water. The process involves the following steps: (a) in a first stage, a the site covering material is prepared from a mixture of natural, vegetable and anthropogenic input materials, secondary raw materials and recycling materials, using a defined recipe to form a cover which supports plant life; (b) the material is applied to the site as one or more layers, where is it is stabilised aerobically and planted; (c) the process is repeated until such time as the covering material has stabilised and adapted the site to the required objectives; (d) if required, the covering substance is first mixed and aerobically stabilised before application to the site.
|
