PURPOSE: To prevent the inutile cleaning of a dust-collecting electrode, to keep high dust collection efficiency by obviating the rescattering of dust and to simplify the structure of the device to detect the time to clean an electrostatic precipitator. CONSTITUTION: The temp. and humidity coefficients h0, t0, h1 and t1 of the resistivity of the gas to be treated and deposited dust are calculated by a cleaning time detecting means 71 from the air temp. Tp detected by a temp. detecting means 21 and the air humidity Hp detected by a humidity detecting means 72. The thickness of the deposited dust d1 is calculated from Ohm's law by using the coefficients h0, t0, h1 and t1, the outputρ0c of a gas resistivity output means 80, the outputρ1c of a dust resistivity output means 81, the voltage Vp between the dust collecting electrodes and a current Ip, the coming of the cleaning time is recognized when the dust thickness d1 attains >= the maximum allowable dust thickness dmax, and cleaning is required.
