The method measures the average resistivity of the ground (2) along a pipe (1), and measures at the ground surface (8), at an extraction point (4), at least two values from the apparent potential (Um) of the pipe, the apparent potential (Ud) of the sacrificial anode (6) by same reference electrode (10) and the voltage (Vs) at the terminals of the extraction point (4). The method then calculates the isolation surface fault limit above which the cathodic protection is no longer assured and compares the calculated surface limit value with a pre-determined acceptability criteria so as to obtain a favourable or non-favourable diagnosis on the state of the pipe protection from the results of this comparison.
