Process for preparing ammonia, alkali metal hydroxides and peroxodisulphates from neutral solutions containing ammonium sulphate or alkali metal sulphate in an electrolytic cell, divided into two compartments by a cation exchanger membrane, by oxidising the sulphate at the anode in the presence of thiocyanates and/or thiocyanic acid (rhodanic acid, hydrogen thiocyanate) and/or dirhodan (cyanogen disulphide) and thioamides and/or thioaldehydes and/or thiocarboxylic acids and/or thiocarboxylic acid esters and/or thioalkanols (alkanthiols) and/or thioketals and/or dithio compounds and/or nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic compounds, the ammonium cations or alkali metal cations being transferred to the cathode compartment at high current yields, ammonia or alkali metal hydroxide being formed in the process, and the sulphate being largely converted to peroxodisulphate. |
