Alkyl (poly)glucoside ether carboxylates of the formula <IMAGE> (I) where R is C1- to C24-alkyl, C1- to C24-alkylphenyl, hydroxy-C2- to C6-alkyl, hydroxy-C1- to C24-alkylphenyl, <IMAGE> or H, R1 is H or methyl, R2 is <IMAGE> X is a hydrogen, alkali metal, ammonium and/or substituted ammonium equivalent, x is from 1 to 10, y is from 0 to 10, z is from 1 to 4, a process for the preparation of the compounds of the formula I and the use of these compounds as an additive to phosphate-free and low-phosphate detergents, are described.
