PURPOSE:To provide a thermal printer capable of using a thermal transfer film substantially up to the trailing end of the film, wherein a pair of electrodes short-circuited by passage of a conductive layer provided on a thermal transfer film are provided at a heating resistor element forming surface of a thermal head brought into contact with the film. CONSTITUTION:The thermal head 31 comprises on its surface the heating resistor elements 32, a pair of exposed electrodes 33, 34, conductor terminals 35 for the elements 32, conductor terminals 38, 39 connected to the electrodes 33, 34 by conductor patterns 36, 37, etc. A trailing end part of the thermal transfer film 40 moved in the direction of an arrow is coated with the conductor layer 41 on the side for contact with the head 31. In printing on a recording paper while moving the film 40 and the paper, when the layer 41 of the film 40 bridges the electrodes 33, 34 to cause short-circuit, a stopping circuit is operated to stop printing. Where the width W of the head 31 is 10mm, the spacing W1 between the elements 32 and the electrodes 33, 34 is set to be about 5mm. |
