The invention relates to a reciprocating compressor in which at least one piston stage is dimensioned in such a way that the connecting rod is wider than the diameter of the cylinder. To facilitate assembly, which has hitherto been difficult as a result, the distance between the crankshaft and the bottom edge of the associated cylinder is dimensioned such that in the position closest to the crankshaft, the gudgeon pin hole within the piston is freely accessible but the piston rings are still within the cylinder. In this way, the attachment of the connecting rod to the piston is relatively easy and the piston can always be pushed back into the cylinder track.
