A trolley-type drawing machine consists of a horizontal trolley which can be moved on a horizontal running rail, a vertical running rail arranged on this trolley on which can be moved a vertical trolley having a drawing head, and a brake for the horizontal trolley which is actuated, via a transmission element, by an actuation member which is arranged on the vertical trolley. In order to achieve smooth actuation of the actuating member and smooth running of the vertical trolley when the horizontal trolley is braked or unbraked, without continuous stressing of wearing parts by forces exerted by the brake mechanism, the actuating member moves the brake, by means of the transmission element, from the unbraked position of rest into a releasably locked braking position, the actuating member and the transmission element being free of stress in the position of rest and in the braking position of the brake.
