IC engine running on coal dust - has capacitance metering probe in suction manifold to detect and control fuel-to-air ratio

The i.c. engine runs on pulverised coal which is mixed with air to form a combustible fuel-air mixture that is introduced into the cylinders. The inlet passage between the mixing device and the cylinders contains several metal plates supplied with a.c. of suitable frequency and forming part of a measuring circuit which detects the capacitance between the plates. The capacitance is an indication of the ratio of pulverised coal to air and is used as an input to the control mechanism on the mixing device to control the fuel-air ratio.
