Safety arrangement for motor vehicle with multi-chamber airbag developed to process obstacle detection signals within defined period

The arrangement has a relatively small vol., finger-shaped airbag that is rapidly inflatable with little energy with sensing functions and that can be inflated into the inflation region of a larger, protective airbag to detect any obstruction in this area, esp. an out-of-position vehicle occupant. An associated contact detector generates a control signal at least during the inflation phase. A controller for the gas generator for the multiple chamber main airbag is connected to the detector and reduces or stops inflation on receiving the control signal. After activating the gas generator, the signals of the detection switching elements can be processed in the controller within a defined time period.
