The brake action is produced by opening the gas change valves in which, between an outlet valve (11) and a cam (12) is a valve drive (13) for transmission of cam movements on the outlet valve with, at least, one hydraulic rod linkage (14). The hydraulic rod linkage, which is connected with an engine oil lubricating circuit (58), has a force-path translation unit (41) which is in active connection at least in part with a cylinder head (31). This force path translation unit can have, at least, one cylinder (42) with a piston (51) on the cam side, with piston face (A2) and a piston (63) on the outlet valve side with piston face (A1). The piston face (A1) may be large compared with the piston face (A2). The translation unit can have a cylinder axially supported on the cylinder head and axially displaceable in same.
