A digital camera is provided to equalize the exposure time throughout the entire region of each image, when obtaining plural images having different exposure times by onetime operation of a focal-plane shutter. A digital camera comprises an image pickup device, a focal-plane shutter having a shutter-leading curtain and a shutter-trailing curtain, a timer for measuring an exposure time, a shutter controller, and a charge readout controller. The shutter controller starts the measurement of the exposure time when movement of the shutter front film is initiated, and drives the shutter-trailing curtain when the measurement of the exposure time is finalized. The charge readout controller reads out charges, which are accumulated by the image pickup device, at least two times during an exposure time. A first readout operation is performed after moving of the shutter-leading curtain before moving of the shutter-trailing curtain. A second readout operation is performed when movement of the shutter-trailing curtain is initiated. The charge readout controller reads out the charges in a direction equal to a moving direction of the shutter-leading curtain at a scanning rate synchronized with a moving rate of the shutter-leading curtain, before movement of the shutter-trailing curtain is initiated.
