Provided are an ion conductive composite separator for a rechargeable battery and a method for manufacturing the same. The separator can include a bulk material having an anode side, a cathode side, and a thickness extending therebetween and an area of aligned particles extending across the bulk material thickness. The aligned particles can be formed as a particle chain, and the particle can be formed as a solid electrolyte material. The ion conductive separator is formed by a plurality of particles being provided in the bulk material and the particles being allowed to be aligned in one or more areas of the ion conductive aligned particles in the bulk material by an AC electric field being applied to the particles and the bulk material while the bulk material is in a liquid state.
