The invention further relates to a method for operating such an application device (1) in the form of a multilayer application station which can be operated in at least one mode of operation characterizing the application or in an inoperative mode. In said method, a relative movement between the lateral guiding mechanism (10) and the breakaway edge (6) can be generated, and said relative movement is used as a control variable for controlling the adjustment of the individual modes of operation.
