PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light emitting laser element which has a low threshold current and high slope efficiency. SOLUTION: The surface light emitting laser element has, on a substrate, an optical resonator structure composed of a lower multilayer film reflecting mirror and an upper multilayer film reflecting mirror arranged across an active layer, and is made of a group III-V semiconductor material, the surface light emitting laser element including a p-type semiconductor layer which is arranged in a region that light is present in or passes through and includes, as a crystal composition, a strain compensating element to which C is added and which is included by an amount such that tensile strain generated to the substrate as a result of the addition of C is compensated and compressive strain to the substrate is generated.
