<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron head having an improved operability by increasing the center-of-gravity depth and improving the hitting feeling. <P>SOLUTION: An iron head (No.5 iron club with the mass of 250 g) is manufactured. Its shape is modeled on a general plane-back type and the head body with the sole width (a distance from the lower end of a face 2 to the rear end of the sole) of 13-18 mm is manufactured of carbon steel S25C by forging process. At that time, the total mass is 283 g. A recess 6 is annularly formed in the back face 3 of the head with a T-shaped slot cutter. In the iron head 1, the wall thickness t1 of a projecting edge part 7 is 5-6 mm in the side of a top 11, and the wall thickness t2 of the base part of the recess is 2.5-3 mm.
