PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift operation indicating device capable of giving shifting operation instructions for achieving running with satisfactory fuel economy while ensuring driver's safety. SOLUTION: A microcomputer 11 gives the shift operation instructions by a shift display unit 30 when the optimum gear position based on a gear-change diagram is different from actual gear position of a manually operated transmission. The microcomputer 11 selects either of standard mode for giving priority to fuel economy and safety-oriented mode for attaching importance to ensuring driver's safety by cooperating with any of a car navigation device 41, a traffic information detection device 42, a skid prevention device 43, and a brake controller 44. When the safety-oriented mode is selected, the microcomputer 11 delays giving of the shift operation instructions by the shift display unit 30 when compared with the time when the standard mode is selected or inhibits giving of the shift operation instructions by the shift display unit 30.
