In an air or other combustible gas heater in which the gas to be heated is mixed in a duct 11 with gases from a burner discharging into the duct, the burner is mounted in a substantially sealed box 18 which is in communication with the duct 11 for the supply of combustion air to the burner, near the point where the burner discharges hot or burning gases. In the arrangement shown, air to be heated flows in direction 15 through the duct 11 under pressure from a fan (not shown). ). Combustion air for the burner is tapped off from the duct 11 through a rectangular port 28 upstream of the burner and near the duct 22 through which the hot or burning gases from the burner are discharged into the duct. The burner shown discharges into a combustion chamber 16 having frustoconical end portions 17. The arrangement provides for a flow of pressurized air to the box 18 to aid combustion when for example a liquid or gaseous fuel burner is used which does not provide for a flow of combustion gases under substantial pressure.
