A method of producing a structural panel comprises the steps of coating mineral fibres with a liquid containing a first thermosetting resin and collecting the coated fibres as a mat, applying a coating of a liquid containing a second thermosetting resin to the surface of the mat fibres and causing part of the second . coating to move through the surface and into the body of the mat, compacting the mat and curing the second resin to form a stiff porous mat, and abrading the upper surface to remove irregularities in the surface and to import a finished contour to the surface. The fibres may be of glass and may be coated with the first resin during their downward attenuation from cooling molten streams of glass. A second resin may be drawn into the body of the mat by suction applied over the mat in the coating zone. A phenolformaldehyde resin, a melamine-formaldehyde, or ureaformaldehyde resin may be used for the coatings. Fillers such as bentonite, clays, chalks and silica can be added to the impregnating resin. Paints may be used to finish the products of the invention and these may include synthetic rubber, casein and oils. The impregnating resins may be applied by a curtain coating, spray guns or rollers. The products of the invention comprise fibres in randomlaid array bonded together by the cured resins at their point of contact with interstices between the fibres. |
