PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of cleaning hollow-fiber membrane modules permitting a reduction in the SS load to the membranes due to poor cleaning of upper parts of the bundle of the membranes. SOLUTION: The method is for cleaning hollow-fiber membrane modules operated on an external pressure filtration system comprising feeding a stock solution from the outer-surface side of the membranes and removing a filtrate from the inner-surface side of the membranes. The membranes are pressurized by injecting a pressurizing gas into the filtrate side of the membranes with the stock-solution side of the membranes filled with a liquid. Then, after the applied pressure of the filtrate side of the membranes is released, the stock-solution side of the membranes are cleaned with bubbles while the filtrate side of the membranes is closed to inhibit transfer of the gas and liquid on the filtrate side. The time from the release of the applied pressure of the filtrate side to the closure of the filtrate side is preferably 1-120 sec. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
