PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for accelerating a process of the removal of trash and crack, and shortening a series of a scanning time when the process of the removal of trash and crack is carried out by scanning continuously images of plurality of frames. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus 1 includes a film scanner 100 for generating the image of a transparent manuscript 102 having a plurality of frames, a film type specifying unit 200 for specifying the type of the film of the transparent manuscript 102, and a trash and crack removing unit 300 for removing the trash and crack of the image of the transparent manuscript 102. The film scanner 100 includes a CCD 109 for generating a pre-scan visible image and a real scan visible image, and a CCD 110 for generating a pre-scan infrared image and a real scan infrared image. Then, the image processing method for the real scan visible image generated based on the generated real scan infrared image and the type of the film of the transparent manuscript specified by the film type specifying unit 200 is set every time the film scanner 100 generates the real scan visible image and the real scan infrared image for one frame out of frames of the transparent manuscript 102.
