[Also in Division B3] A tool for inserting a blind nut 31 into an aperture 29 in a workpiece 30 comprises a setting head 5 from which projects a threaded portion 19 of a shaft 15 which has at its lower end a bolt 24 which is pivotally mounted on the portion 19 and is movable between a position in which the axis of the bolt is aligned with the axis of the shaft 15 and the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the axis of the bolt is normal to the axis of the shaft. The shaft 15 is secured, by a radial pin 17, in a sleeve 6 which is mounted on a driving shaft 3 and is locked by a pin 7. A nosepiece 8 is mounted on the outside of the sleeve and is retained by a plurality of pins 10, there is a thrust bearing 11 between the sleeve, which rotates, and the nose-piece which is stationary. The shaft 3 is driven through a torque-limiting clutch 2 by a shaft 1 which is connected to a reversible electric motor. Operation.-The nut 31 is screwed on to the bolt 24 which is then turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the nut and bolt can be passed through the aperture 29. The drive to the shaft 3 is started and the bolt swings, due to centrifugal force, to the position in which it is aligned with the shaft 15. The tool is withdrawn until the nut 31 engages the blind side of the work and the nut then travels along the thread of the bolt and on to the threaded portion 19, the thread on which is a continuation of the thread on the bolt. When the nose-piece 8 contacts the surface of the workpiece 30, a collar 28 on the nut is drawn into the aperture 29 to secure the nut to the workpiece. The drive to the shaft 3 is then reversed to remove the portion 19 and the bolt 24 from the nut. |
