Method for comparing the phase of two AC voltages using a single pole, single test electrode phase comparator. Said method has the following steps: application of the test electrode to first and second voltage lines in turn and counting of a number of cycles at a reference frequency within a give time period for each line; division of the impulse numbers obtained for each line to determine a remainder; and comparison of the remainder with a threshold value to determine if the phase difference is within an acceptable threshold. The invention also relates to a corresponding single pole phase comparator with a single test electrode.
